DBA/Developer Day - Friday 19th August

During the first two weeks of August Oracle is moving into the Sun Building on Northbourne Avenue. The ACT Oracle User Group has managed to obtain two well known and key speakers who are presenting at InSync during the third week of August in Sydney and they have agreed to come to Canberra to present to us. The speakers, Tim Hall and Chris Muir are both well known to the ACTOUG and have presented before. We are dedicating the whole DBA/Developer morning to them and they will be presenting and doing a Q&A during the morning. So we can test out the new rooms at the Oracle/Sun building, network, socialise and learn a lot from what they have to say.

The Agenda so far is:
Speaker: Chris Muir
Title: A change is as good as a REST: JDeveloper 11g's REST web services
Abstract: OAP based web services can seem a hard slog to develop with their contract first design requirements, and over engineered specification that includes everything plus the kitchen sink. REST based web services provide light relief for quick web service development where the constraints of SOAP web services feel extreme for some short sharp development. Luckily Oracle's JDeveloper provides support for both styles, and in this presentation Chris Muir will demonstrate a short and sweet demonstration to getting REST web services up and running, using JDeveloper's JAX-RS support.
Bio: Chris Muir is an Oracle ACE Director and an Oracle systems developer and trainer for SAGE Computing Services in Australia. With over ten years working in traditional Oracle development, he has more recently earned battle scars working with, training with, and promoting JDeveloper, ADF, Web services, and Fusion Middleware. A long time user group supporter and presenter down under and abroad, in 2009 he won the Oracle ACE Director of the Year award from Oracle Magazine thanks to his efforts. You can check out his blog at: http://one-size-doesnt-fit-all.blogspot.com/

Speaker: Tim Hall
Bio "Oracle ACE of the Year 2006" Tim Hall is an Oracle DBA/Developer and well known Oracle blogger at http://www.oracle-base.com. If that isn't enough, he's written two books and over 400 articles, is an Oracle ACE Director, has presented at numerous user groups and conferences worldwide and recently presented a series of 2-day PL/SQL tuning seminars in Europe and Asia-Pacific as part of the "Oracle University Celebrity Series"

Information and upcoming events for the next few months.

We would like to bring to your attention several events taking place in the next month or so.

Firstly, Marcelle will be conducting a webinar on Tuesday May 31 2001 between 4pm and 5pm EST. Its hosted by ODTUG and all members are welcome to listen in (though the actual timing isn't good for Australians). If you register you will be able to get the video stream to download after the webinar is finished so you can watch it at your own leisure.
You can register at https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/582252067 and watch the replay at http://www.odtug.com/apex/f?p=500:235:0::::P235_NEWS_ID:3061 after registering.

The topic is:
DBA for Developers - Marcelle Kratochvil, Piction CTO
There is more to database management than creating a table and doing a backup. This presentation will take the developer on a tour of what it means to be a DBA, what mindset is required, and how to work with a DBA and speak in their language. The presentation will additionally cover technical aspects of tuning, storage, networking, concurrency, security, and architecture. It will cover why DBAs and developers always clash, the baseball bat mentality, and what scalability really means. As a developer, you will gain valuable insight into the world of the DBA and realize that there are a huge variety of DBA species out there, each with their own habits, styles, and characteristics (including feeding habits). Your world view of DBAs will never be the same again.

Secondly, there is an open invitation from Quest to a seminar titled "Transform the Way You Manage Database Performance with Invaluable Expert Insight".
This event will be held on 1 June 2011 in Canberra at Cliftons on Moore St. The seminar will run between 8:30 am and noon.
You can register directly at http://australia.quest.com/ecard/31503/11513/

Finally, the "InSync11" conference is being run in Sydney in August. It looks a good line up of presenters. More information about the conference can be found at http://www.insync-conference.com.au/ . Currently Marcelle is using her powers of persuasion to also bring some of the presenters to Canberra to potentially hold some seminars here after the conference, but that is still no substitute for attending the conference

Inaugural "Beer Debate"

The ACTOUG will be holding its inaugural "beer debate" in July (tentative date is 6pm Thursday 22nd July). Likely location is the Durham or Holy Grail in Kingston.

The goal is to pick an interesting topic, and over a beer debate it. There will be an impartial moderator to ensure the discussion stays lively and within bounds. Its not a formal debate, more drink a beer and explain why your side of the argument is superior to the other side.

The User Group will cover costs (beer + beer food) but there will be a limit of 8 people.
Warning: The debate might be taped for a podcast.

The first topic will be MySQL vs Oracle. - Preference will be given for those who are serious MySQL users (so if you know any MySQL DBA's you can invite them even if they are not members).

If you would like to attend, and/or you know someone who is a MySQL expert and who is willing to defend MySQL, please email marcel@piction.com Please include which side you are likely going to be on. A debate isn't interesting if its one sided. So there will be 4 for MySQL and 4 for Oracle.

Those interested need to express it by cob Friday 26th June.

Special Members Half Day Presentation

The ACTOUG has managed to secure Chris Muir to do a special half day presentation for the members. The presentation is being sponsored by the Oracle ACE Director Program. Chris is well know in Canberra and has presented on numerous occasions over the last ten years.

Seminar Title: Simple database web services and Oracle JDeveloper 11g JAX-WS
When: Thursday 18th March 9.30am - 12.30pm
Where: Oracle Conference Rooms, Ground Floor Turner (for those not aware, Oracle has refurbished the ground floor in Turner allowing us to now have presentations on site)
Cost: Free to Members

Presentation 1: Back to basics: Simple database web services without the need for SOA

Abstract: Oracle is heavily heading down the SOA line which can be intimidating to database programmers with no experience in the web service arena or running application servers, let alone SOA. This presentation will identify as a first step that database programmers can make use of database packages like utl_http, utl_dbws and 11g's Native Web Services for consuming and publishing web services without adopting SOA straight off the ranks.

Agenda:

  • * Basic web service terminology: HTTP, SOAP, WSDL, RPC vs Document styles
  • * Consuming web services from the Oracle Database options
  • * Investigation of utl_http and utl_dbws
  • * Publishing native web services from the Oracle 11g Database

Presentation 2:Oracle JDeveloper 11g JAX-WS Web Services: As easy as 1-2-3: XSD, WSDL, Generate!

Abstract: Web services used to be hard. Creating XML schemas, long-winded Web Services Description Language (WSDL) code, and back-end Java code took much effort. Today Oracle JDeveloper 11g enables developers to visually design both the schemas and WSDL code by drag and drop and generate Web services based on both of these with the latest Java EE JAX-WS/JAXB Web service standards with just a few clicks. Finally programmers can get back to thinking about the programming problem they need to solve without wasting time setting up the Web service artifacts, which can be tedious, error-prone, and very repetitive. Learn more in this session.

(see: http://www.sagecomputing.com.au/presentations_sage_computing_services.html )

Bio: Chris Muir has slaved away for the last 10 years as an Oracle specialist in Australia for SAGE Computing Services, with battle scars from using the latest Oracle tools including JDeveloper, APEX and others. As an Oracle ACE Director, Oracle ACE Director of the Year in 2009, a former president of the Victorian Australian Oracle User Group branch, and a presenter at user group events and Oracle Open World, Chris is an active promoter of Oracle technology and its users.

Somehow he even finds time to blog at: http://one-size-doesnt-fit-all.blogspot.com/
